A CORNISH mother-of-two put her own life on the line this afternoon by confronting suspected terrorists just seconds after they had killed a soldier in London.
According to The Telegraph, cub scout leader Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, thought to be from Helston, tried to persuade the soldier’s alleged murderers to hand over their weapons.
She selflessly engaged the men in conversation and kept her nerve as one of them told her: “We want to start a war in London tonight.”
Mrs Loyau-Kennett, 48, was one of the first people on the scene after the two Islamic extremists butchered a soldier in Woolwich, south east London.
She was photographed by onlookers confronting one of the attackers who was holding a bloodied knife.
The Telegraph reported that Mrs Loyau-Kennett was a passenger on a number 53 bus which was travelling past the scene, and jumped off to check the soldier’s pulse.
She told the newspaper: “Being a cub leader I have my first aid so when I saw this guy on the floor I thought it was an accident then I saw the guy was dead and I could not feel any pulse.
“And then when I went up there was this black guy with a revolver and a kitchen knife, he had what looked like butcher’s tools and he had a little axe, to cut the bones, and two large knives and he said ‘move off the body’.
“So I thought ‘OK, I don’t know what is going on here’ and he was covered with blood. I thought I had better start talking to him before he starts attacking somebody else. I thought these people usually have a message so I said ‘what do you want?’
“I asked him if he did it and he said yes and I said why? And he said because he has killed Muslim people in Muslim countries, he said he was a British soldier and I said really and he said ‘I killed him because he killed Muslims and I am fed up with people killing Muslims in Afghanistan they have nothing to do there.”
Moments earlier, the killers had hacked at the soldier “like a piece of meat”, and when Mrs Loyau-Kennett arrived on the scene they were roaming John Wilson Street waiting for police to arrive so they could stage a final confrontation with them.
She said: “I started to talk to him and I started to notice more weapons and the guy behind him with more weapons as well. By then, people had started to gather around. So I thought OK, I should keep him talking to me before he noticed everything around him.
“He was not high, he was not on drugs, he was not an alcoholic or drunk, he was just distressed, upset. He was in full control of his decisions and ready to everything he wanted to do.
I said ‘right now it is only you versus many people, you are going to lose, what would you like to do?’ and he said I would like to stay and fight.”
The suspect in the black hat then went to speak to someone else and Mrs Loyau-Kennett tried to engage with the other man in the light coat.
She said: “The other one was much shier and I went to him and I said ‘well, what about you? Would you like to give me what you have in your hands?’ I did not want to say weapons but I thought it was better having them aimed on one person like me rather than everybody there, children were starting to leave school as well.”

FRIENDS of a 26-year-old mother with cancer that has spread throughout her body are holding a big fundraising event this weekend to send her and her young family on the holiday of a lifetime.
Ashton Forder of Redruth was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2009 but she has recently found out that the cancer has spread to her diaphragm and is now inoperable.
She will start a few months of chemotherapy a week after the fundraiser before she, her husband and their three children will make the planned trip to Disneyland in Paris.
Touched by her desperate plight, friends Gemma Delaney, Ruth Stevens, Zoey Bryant and Lisa Williams have organised a fundraising event.
It takes place at the Coppice Inn, Lanner, on Saturday and the aim is to raise enough money to send Ashton and her family to the theme park.
Gemma said: “She is one of my best friends. The cancer started just after I got to know her five years ago, and she is just so brave. She has been through such a tough time.”
On the fundraising day, from noon to 5pm, there will be a bouncy castle, barbecue, stalls, competitions, face-painting and a large raffle.
There is an adults-only disco and live band from 6pm, with tickets at £5 each, to be booked in advance from the Coppice on 01209 216668.

POLICE in Camborne have met with socially isolated and lonely veterans.
They offered the members of Lottery funded Active Plus group home security and crime reduction advice.
Camborne PCSO Andrew Taylor explained: “We were asked to attend one of their meetings to offer home security and crime reduction advice which we were more than happy to assist with.
“For me this is a massive part of why I became a PCSO and so jumped at the chance to provide any help I could.
“At the meeting we also handed out leaflets and fliers in regards to property marking, Neighbourhood Watch and Crimestoppers.
“It was a great opportunity for not only us to put our thoughts and ideas forward but to hear of peoples experience and crime prevention ideas.”
The force will be meeting with Active Plus again next month.

The Fowey RNLI inshore lifeboat crew received a call to rescue a lady with a suspected broken arm near Polridmouth earlier today.

Olive Two, the Fowey inshore lifeboat, was launched following reports of a lady having fallen on rocks.

When crew members, Jan Philp, Nial Hoddinott and Adam Russell arrived at the scene the lady was being comforted by other walkers. She was holding her arm across her body.

The crew secured the patients arm before walking her to the inshore lifeboat and taking her to meet a waiting ambulance at Caffa Mill car park, Fowey, where she was attended by paramedics.

Fortunately, despite strong winds, the sea was calm enabling the crew to make good time.

The lifeboat was returned to the station at 4pm.

Police are concerned for the welfare of a Falmouth man who was last seen on Monday this week (20 May). This matter was raised with officers when he failed to turn up for work on Tuesday.

This man is called Luke Atkins, aged 35 years and police have described this man as vulnerable.

Luke is described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall and of proportionate build. He has mousey blond, shoulder length hair that is balding on top, with a full beard. He may have been wearing a green hooded fleece and almost always wears his hood up or wears a sun hat. He may be carrying a black and red rucksack.

One notable characteristic of Luke is that he walks with a pronounced forward lean.

A police spokesperson said: “We are hopeful that Luke is somewhere in the Cornwall area and we would like the public to help us with information that can aid our search. We know he likes the coast so I would ask walkers and dog walkers in particular to be vigilant and report anything that may assist us.”

Police are keen to ask members of the public who believe they may have seen this man, to contact them on 101 and quote log 673 of 21 May 2013.
