A teenage driver is being questioned by members of Devon and Cornwall Police’s major crime investigation team after a woman he knew died after being hit by a car.
The 47-year-old victim, from St Austell, was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth following the collision in Tremayne Road, St Austell, on Thursday night.
She had suffered serious injuries in the incident and subsequently died yesterday morning.
The case is being investigated by officers from the force’s major crime investigation team (MCIT) and St Austell CID.
The 18-year-old driver of the Citroen Saxo, who is believed to be local, was arrested and is being questioned at Newquay Police Station.
Officers have confirmed that the man and the woman were known to each other, but have refused to say whether they were related.
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said the circumstances of the woman’s death were now under scrutiny.
“Police are treating the death as unexplained at this time and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision,” he said.
Officers were called to the scene at around 9.20pm and attended the incident along with fire and ambulance crews.
The immediate area was cordoned off overnight while inquiries were carried out.
Police have urged witnesses to contact them on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
