Truro City 2 Yeovil Town 2
Truro City boss Lee Hodges says he hopes to sign former Worcester City keeper Tim Sundercombe as a replacement for last season’s Number 1 Martin Rice, who is to rejoin his former club Torquay United.
The 6ft 5ins Sundercombe (22), made his City debut as a substitute in their midweek defeat at Falmouth Town and played the whole 90 minutes in Saturday’s deserved draw against League 1 side Yeovil Town.
And the City manager has been sufficiently impressed with what he has seen to offer Sundercombe a contract to play for the Blue Square Bet South newcomers.
In Saturday’s game a slightly fortunate late equaliser saved City from a second successive defeat after opening their pre-season campaign with a 3-2 loss at Falmouth Town.
This was a vastly improved performance by City who produced some excellent football in what was a very entertaining game.
City began the match in great fashion when Dan Smith picked up loose ball and fired home from the edge of the area, with his shot going in off the post. but six minutes later Yeovil trialist Kerrea Gilbert crossed for Andy Williams to head home.
And at the start of the second half, Williams made it 2-1 with a close range header after Sundercombe, produced a fine save to keep out Gilbert’s header only for the ball to fall kindly for the Yeovil striker who could hardly miss from six yards out.
That looked enough to give Yeovil the win until, with just seven minutes left, Scott Walker’s corner from the right was deflected into his own net by Yeovil substitute Aran Lescott.
Lee Hodges said: "After Tuesday at Falmouth (when City lost 3-2) it was really pleasing to watch the way we played. We competed very well.
"Once we changed it around after being overrun in midfield early on I thought we looked very comfortable and strong.
"Our fitness levels I think our much higher than they were last season.
"Yeovil are a very strong outfit and it was pleasing to see us compete against them. It is early days yet and it is all about preparing for when we start the season at Cheltenham on August 13."
